Funeral service for Dr. George Wendell Phillips, pioneer Sayre physician who died at his home Monday afternoon following a heart attack were held Wednesday morning at the First Christian church with Rev. Grover Thompson officiating.
Dr. Phillips had been in ill health for the past year and a half but his sudden death came as a shock to the members of his family. Mrs. Phillips had returned home from Borger where she had be visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wonder only a short time before her husband died.
He was born in Mt. Carmel, Ky., on June 2, 1887 (should be 1877) and was married to Miss Mattie Wyatt at McWhorter, Ky., on December 26, 1907. They moved to Sayre in November 1918 and had made their home here since that time.
He was a member of the Sayre First Christian church. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee. He was a former member of the Masonic lodge and of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and was an active member of the American Medical Association and of the State Medical Association.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Phillips of the home address; one daughter, Mrs. Ted Wonder of Borger; one son, Wendell of Sayre; two brothers, John and Henry of Hamilton, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Nana Pennington also of Hamilton, Ohio and two grandchildren.
Committal was in the Sayre-Doxey cemetery with the Scroggins funeral home in charge of arrangements.
