Alice C. Godwin Morrow was the daughter of Mary Ann Elliott (born: 14 June 1826 in Rapides Parish, LA died: 14 August 1890, in Rapides Parish, LA) and Rev. William Daniel Godwin (born: 1824 in LA died: 30 Dec 1907 in Rapides Parish, LA). Her great grandfather was Thomas Elliott (born: 1761 died: 1805 in the Feliciana area of "West Florida" in the present-day East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, area). Thomas Elliott was aide-de-camp to General Frances Marion during the Revolutionary War.
Alice C. Godwin married Edwin Morrow (born: 16 September 1846 died: 15 October 1890) on 28 December 1871 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Alice C. Godwin Morrow and Edwin Morrow had the following children: (1) Madella Morrow (born: 14 March 1873). She married Daniel Webster Bailey; (2) William Reynolds Morrow (born: 29 Aug 1875). He never married; (3) Elizabeth (Georgie) Morrow (born: 24 June 1877 died: 19 June 1880 in Big Cane, La.); (4) John Godwin Morrow (born: 22 Aug 1879 died: 23 September 1945). Alice C. Godwin Morrow taught school in a one-room school house in Big Cane, Louisiana. One-room school houses were very common in the South in the 1800's and early 1900's. A teacher must have been highly skilled to have taught in those days because she/he would have been teaching all grades – one through twelve.
After her husband's death in a cotton gin accident on 15 October 1890, Alice Godwin Morrow conducted this school on her farm. Alice C. Godwin Morrow had a very large class, with five of her own children in the school. It is incredible that she taught such a large group of children and teenagers all of the subjects from the first grade through the twelfth grade. Each day must have been a rather long exhaustive day for her. She is remembered as a loving, compassionate mother.

"Morrow – Mrs. Alice C. Morrow was born April 30, 1849 and died June 8 1919. She was the eldest child of Rev. and Mrs. W. D. Godwin. She spent her early childhood with her parents in Big Cane, Louisiana. Later her parents made their home in Rapides Parish.
This beautiful home during the Civil War stood with its doors open to stricken widows, orphans, and any needy person.
Later she married Mr. Edwin E. Morrow and they returned to Big Cane where they lived a happy and prosperous life until his death. Seven children were born to them.
The Morrow home was known for and open for its generous hospitality. Mrs. Morrow would take in the homeless and made sure they did not come in vain to ask for help. Her more fortunate friends, called her to their bedside because she was a splendid nurse, and her smiling presence cheered all. Then at any time of night the writer has seen her leave her bed and go to the relief of some poor sick or dying colored person on her plantation who had sent for her.
Mrs. Morrow was a woman full of energy and additionally, she had good judgment. She believed in education and progress and was ever striving for the advancement of any community in which she lived.
For the past four or five years she had lived with her children, making her home for most of the time with her youngest daughter, Mrs. K. Toler.
Her health for some months before her death had not been very good so she went to visit her daughter, Eva Gill of Ruston, trusting that in that healthful town she would soon be well again. Her health seemed to improve while there and her doctors thought that she would soon be strong again.
On Saturday night after she had been at her daughter's a little more than a week she was very cheerful and was counting on her children from Shreveport spending the next day with her but the next morning at six o'clock without a struggle and with a smile on her face she fell asleep in the arms of Jesus.
Accompanied by four of her children other members of the family and friends her body was taken to Singer, the beautiful graveyard of her choice and laid lovingly away on June 9th, 1919.
She leaves to mourn her loss six children, one brother, and many more relatives and a host of friends.
A beautiful spirit has flown,
To the God who loaned her to us,
And she said "I'm ready to go,
For in Heaven I've placed my trust."
For she had cheerfully fought life's battles,
No complaining slacker was she –
She lovingly and unselfishly had lived
'Till she knelt at our Father's knee."
