William Reynolds "Willie" Morrow was born in St. Landry Parish, LA, on 29 Aug 1875 to parents Edwin E. Morrow (1896 – 1890) and Alice Cleo Godwin Morrow (1849 – 1919). His father was a Confederate Army veteran who had served four years in the 8th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment before acquiring a plantation.
William was the second oldest of his siblings, which included Madella Mary Morrow Bailey (1873 – 1961), Elizabeth "Georgie" Morrow (1877 – 1880), John Godwin Morrow (1877 – 1945), Eva Edwina Morrow Gill (1881 – 1944), Alice Elliott Morrow Stewart (1884 – 1974), and Stella Maubry Morrow Toler (1887 – 1964).
The Morrow family plantation was in St. Landry Parish, but tragically, when William was just 15, his father Edwin was killed in a cotton gin accident, placing a large responsibility on young William to help his mother Alice run the plantation and a one-room school operating on the plantation. He would also have had a significant role in the rearing of his five remaining siblings. (Elizabeth had died at the age of three when William was 5 years old.)
William is listed on one census as a farm manager, so presumably he carried the bulk of responsibility in running the plantation while his mother taught school. The family held onto the property at least until 1915, when Alice pursued a Widow's Pension (Confederate Army). On her application, she stated that she was in danger of losing the property if unable to get help. Her application was unfortunately denied due to lack of documentation and presumably she lost the property some time after. Alice died four years later in Ruston at the home of her daughter Eva and is buried in Newlin Cemetery in Beauregard Parish next to her grandson Hollis Bailey.
William spent the remainder of his life in Shreveport, alternating between the homes of his sisters Alice Stewart and Stella Toler. He worked various odd jobs as a laborer, at one time on a pipe line.
Although he did not marry or have his own children, he is remembered by his nieces and nephews (as well as great-nieces and -nephews) as a gentle soul who delighted in taking care of them as they were growing up. They have fond memories of "Uncle Bill" taking them to the park and feeding the squirrels. His experience in raising his siblings would have been invaluable as he cared for and shepherded the next generations with kindness and love.
William Morrow died 12 Sep 1962 at the age of 87 in Shreveport, LA, and is buried alongside his sister Stella Toler in Forest Park East Cemetery.
