James Houston was born and raised on his father's farm near what is now Houstonville in Iredell County, North Carolina. He ran a farm and mill on Hunting Creek until about 1810 but left North Carolina and settled near Lewisburg, Tennessee where he carved a new farm out of wilderness. He wrote several letters back home which persuaded his father, Christopher Houston, to leave his large estate and make a new place on a portion of James' land in 1815. After his father's death, James was traveling on horseback to settle the estate when he was caught in a storm. He was unable to find shelter to get dry. He made it home but caught pneumonia and died several days later.

The Houston Cemetery is on James' farm which is still an active farm today.
