Alfred made his first trip to Missouri in October 1821 in an effort to find new farmland. About 1828, he purchased some land approximately 2 miles west of Eldon. He and Melinda settled on that land and raised their nine children there. He built his house and barn by hand. Although the house has been added to over the years, it and the barn, with their hand-hewn log structures, are still in use today.
