James G. Blattel, 89, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Scott City, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Life Care Center.

He was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Fornfelt (now Scott City), to Fred J. and May E. Collie Blattel. He and Lillian Virginia Jackson were married July 15, 1946, in Fornfelt.

James was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and also worked as a service station attendant approximately 15 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and VFW Post 3838.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James (Doris) Blattel of Jackson; two daughters, Linda (Larry) Summers and Vicki (Tim) Raines of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Heather (Kody) Newkirk, Jaime (Chuck) Williams, Brandon (Nancy) Blattel, Adam Raines; six great-grandchildren, Corie, Jalen and Cameron Williams, Kaya and Kiana Newkirk and Boyd Blattel.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Joseph; three brothers; and two sisters.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Parish prayers will be at 5.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. Tom Kiefer as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Scott City with full military honors.
