Hezekiah Brewer Hall, the third son of Erastus and Betsey J. Hall, was born at Raymondville, N.Y., Feb. 15, 1815. His father was the first land taker in the town of Norfolk. Five years before Hezekiah was born, he cut a road through the forest from his crude home in Raymondville to the Union in Potsdam, a distance of nine miles. The subject of this sketch was educated at St. Lawrence and Ogdensburg Academies. He early became very proficient as a land surveyor, being selected at the age of sixteen years as the chief of a party of surveyors on the McVicker lands. Through young manhood he was partner with his father in lumber manufacturing, farming and other enterprises. In 1850 he formed one of that historic number of gold seekers in California, in which adventure he was very successful, but failing health compelled his return.
From 1863 to 1891 he held the position of agent for the McVicker lands in Norfolk and Louisville. In 1870 he established his home on North Main Street in Norwood, where he has since resided a most respected and honored citizen. Mr. Hall had been for a year or more in gradually failing health, and expired at his home Nov. 16, in his 81st year.
The last fifteen years of his life had been most happily spent in marital relation with her who survives him, Corinthia C., daughter of Lloyd C. Yale.
Three of Mr. Hall's five brothers still live, Giles J., of Norwood, Anson S., of Raymondville, and Thomas S., of La Canada, Cal. A step-son, to whom he was much attached, Charles H. Wheeler of Minneapolis, and Katie W., who had resided in his family for eight years, also mourn his departure. At sixteen years of age our departed brother gave his heart to God, soon after which he united with the Congregational Church and has ever since been an active member. He was also a member of the St. Lawrence County Bible Society, being personally a great lover of the promises of God. The funeral services were largely attended from his late residence, Nov. 18, his pastor, Rev. W.D. Eddy, officiating, assisted by Rev. J. W. Simpson. The text was selected from one of Mr. Hall's favorite pases, Romans 5:1.
