This is the opening paragraph of an article written by town historian, Mrs. Maude Wing, appearing in the Massena NY Observer, Thursday, Sept. 29, 1960, page 20. There is a section on the Hall family further in the article writen by a descendent, Ella R. Lahey. Aportion of that follows:
"According to family tradition and county histories, Erastus Hall came to Potsdam in the spring of 1809. Through Judge Raymond, he was persuaded to take up the land agency for the area of Louisville and Norfolk, areas in those days, "wild lands."
Farms around Raymondville were surveyed that summer by Sewell Raymond and the first farm contract was obtained by Erastus Hall. He remained all that summer and built a frame house on the river near the site of the present bridge.
The next year, he brought his wife, Elizabeth Jackson Hall, from her home in Massachusetts, through the woods, on horseback.
Elizabeth Jackson Hall was the daughter of Giles Jackson, a Revolutionary War offier, who as chief of staff, settled accounts with General Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777.
There were seven children born in Raymondville."
