In the 1 June 1900, Sugar Loaf Township, East Carondelet, St. Clair Co., IL Census, seven-year-old Uncle Bill is living at home with his folks and siblings.

However, his mother died not long afterwards. He and a brother are living with their sister "Aunt Lou" Maurer Johnston and her family in St. Louis in 1910.

Uncle Bill's WWI Draft Registration indicates his birthplace as East Carondelet, while his birthplace is listed elsewhere as Sugarloaf Township - that township includes the Village of East Carondelet, the Village of Dupo, and other unincorporated areas.

On 18 June 1919, Uncle Bill married Jane "Jennie" Elizabeth Ellis Clampitte in St. Louis. "Clampitte" is her name from a previous marriage to William M. Clampitte. Her father was an Ellis.

Bill is obviously named after his maternal grandfather, Wilhelm "William" Kirchhoff; sometimes, the name is seen with just one "f." Spellings vary, even within the family.

Children include:

Charles E. Maurer;
Bertha Clampett Maurer Dunlap;
Clarence Woodell Maurer, Sr.;
William Kirchhoff Maurer, Jr.;
Rosie M[ae?];
Jane Elizabeth "Betsy" Maurer Aaron;
Margaret;
Georgia Maurer Lewis;
and Clyde Benton Maurer.

As far as I can tell, the family lived in St. Louis, Louisville, Richmond, and then Winston-Salem. The 1930 census for the latter indicates Uncle Bill was an operator at a tobacco factory.

Clyde was the last of his children to pass away; this occurred on 23 April 2008. I actually "met" him over the phone when I first delved into genealogy.
