"Pioneer citizen died in Williamson. George C. Bailey died Tuesday, shortly after the noon hour, at his home in Williamson, where he had moved two years ago from this place. His passing was not a surprise to his friends and those who knew him for he had been very ill all through the past summer, the illness culminating in his death Tuesday. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of the Civil War and had been what generals call a good soldier. After coming through that terrible four years of devastation he fell to his task of placing his state community back to a livable condition. His career was from then on intermixed with business and politics. Something like twenty-seven years ago he came to Richlands with his family and settled, while the town was yet in its infancy. He remained here and took an active part in civic affairs through the principal part of the town's early growth. He was Mayor of the city for several terms and was also a Justice of the Peace for a good may years. He was a man of genuine character and wonderful ability. Without a doubt he had filled his purpose in life in service to mankind. He was known to practically everyone here as one of the town's pioneers. There were many who esteemed him as a very dear friend. The remains were brought to Baptist Valley, Wednesday where they were interred that afternoon in the old Bailey Cemetery, beside the grassy plots of his mother and father. The funeral service was held at the cemetery at 3 o'clock in the charge of the Rev. Clyde Douthat. Besides his wife, Mrs. Eliza Bailey, the following sons and daughters survive; Mrs. Mary Gillespie, Williamson; Mrs. Maggie Catron, Roanoke; Mrs. Ethel Wood, Norton; Sherman Bailey of Kimball; Peery, Baptist Valley; Reese, Williamson; and Jake of West Virginia. Will Bailey, another son and a resident of Williamson, preceded his father to the grave by exactly one week. Mr. Bailey died suddenly last Wednesday at the Williamson hospital, in Williamson. He had been a resident of that city for several years, and he was aged about thirty-five. The remains were taken to his wife's home in Bluff City, Tenn. For burial.
