William was the son of William Kester and Sarah Faussett Tomkins.

He married Eliza Jane Buckius about 1854 in Frankford, Philadelphia PA. They were the parents of 10 children.

The Roanoke, Virginia Times for Tuesday, August 17, 1897: "William Y. Kester died yesterday just before noon at the family residence, 629 Henry street, after a severe illness, aged 67 years. The cause of death was a general break down of health superinduced by a spell of la grippe seven years ago. Deceased was one of Roanoke's most successful merchant tailors. He was born in New York, but was raised in the city of Philadelphia, from which
place he removed to this city in 1883. Deceased leaves a family of nine children, all of whom are grown, as follows: Wm. H. Kester, of Martinsville; C.A. Kester, of Pittston, Pa; J.F. and H.B. Kester, of this city; R.J. Kester, of King Fisher, Oklahoma, who was prevented from seeing his father owing to a runaway accident in which he was seriously injured. Mrs. D.C. Fitzgerald, Mrs. W.J. Kytton, Mrs. E. Reed Brown and Mrs. W.S. Saville, all of this city. The funeral services will take place this morning at 10 o'clock at Trinity M.E. Church, of which the
deceased was a member, and will be conducted by Rev J C Jones, after which the remains will be interred in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Kester was well known here and had the respect of all who knew him. He was honest and upright in all his business transactions and his competitors in business realized that he was always alive to the interest of the trade, not for personal aggrandizement so much as it was a desire to properly treat all with whom he came in competition and to follow the strict law of honesty in his business as well as his private life."
