According to her obituary, Marie was ill for six weeks and after an attempted operation for "kidney trouble," she died.
According to her sister, Ida Witt Franks who was living in the same small town, Marie died after a premature childbirth and her stillborn son was buried with her. Ida declared lilacs were blooming during the funeral and she could never after abide the scent of lilac. Marie's children were:
