The last of seven children of Gustav & Augusta Fritz Witt, Herman was fostered to the Fred Billings family when his mother died suddenly in August of 1899.

He returned to his family in Sibley in his teens and played on the softball team with brother Bill. He sometimes sang publically on special occasions.
He served in W. W. I

On April 4, 1920 he married Jessie Todd in Sibley.
There were no children. Herman died of a burst appendix.

His widow later remarried. She was alive in 2002.
