Services for William J. Coates, 78, of Nampa, who died Monday, Sept. 17, at a Nampa hospital, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nampa Eleventh Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1500 Smith Ave., Nampa, with Bishop Roscoe W. Luekenga Jr., officiating.
Interment will follow at the Kohlerlawn Cemetery. Services and interment are under the direction of the Alsip Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
Mr. Coates was born Jan. 29, 1906, at Mt. Pleasant, Utah. In May of 1906 he moved with his family to Carey, Idaho, where he was reared and educated. In 1923 the family moved to Richfield where he farmed. In 1928 he moved to Kuna and to Nampa in 1929.
He was married to Ellen Yoast June 22, 1929, at Vale, Ore., and they made their home in Nampa. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple on April 25, 1958.
Mr. Coates helped construct Lake Lowell in the early 1930s. In 1942 he went to work for the Union Pacific Fruit Express Shops where he worked most of his years as a foreman and clerk at the ice plant. He retired on June 28, 1972.
He was an active member of the Nampa Eleventh Ward LDS Church where he was a member of the High Priest Quorum. During his years in the LDS Church he also served as a Sunday school teacher, ward clerk and other positions.
He is survived by his wife of Nampa; two sons, Bill D. Coates and DeWayne W. Coates, both of Nampa; three daughters, Deloris J. Doughty, Deer Park, Texas, Imogene M. Newbrey, Bremerton, Wash., and Betty C. Ostyn, Nampa; two brothers, Franklin Coates, Benton City, Wash., and Earl J. Coates, Melba; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, four brothers and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Alsip Funeral Chapel from 3 to 9 tonight and at the church on Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:15.
