Samuel Sutcliffe was born in Soyland, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, the son of Joseph Sutcliffe and his second wife Sarah Wilson. Samuel was baptized at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Soyland on February 28, 1826. He came to Philadelphia on May 10, 1834 on Ship Algonquin with his father, Joseph, Mother Sarah, sisters, Mary, Ann and Lucy and brother Joseph. Samuel was a bricklayer. He bought several real estate properties in Manayunk. He bought a large parcel on Grape street and subdivided the property, selling off all but one lot. He lived at 214 Grape street in 1863. He served in the Pennsylvania Reserve during the emergency of 1862 and 1863 as a Second Lt. Samuel died of consumption in his house on Jackson street, Manayunk. Samuel also had a son James S Sutcliffe who was born around 1849 and died young. Samuel also had a daughter Margaret who was born about 1853 who married Francis Engle. Margaret lived at the Roxborough Poor Farm in the 1910 census and died around 1917 and was buried at Mt Moriah Cemetery. Samuel's death certificate says he was buried at Roxborough Vault (Leverington Cemetery) but records from Mt Moriah show that his body was moved there a few days later, along with his child (James S Sutcliffe, I hope) Also buried here are: William Stevenson 1889, Stevenson 1883, Lizzie Wray 1890, Jane Stevenson 1898, Blackburn 1859.
