After his father's death in 1869, Lewis, his sister Mary and brother Samuel went to live in an orphanage. According to the family story he stepped on a rusty nail and died. His death certificate stated that he died of traumatic tetanus. He was listed as a worker in a cotton factory. He died at age 12 or 13 years, living at 150 Levering street, Manayunk. his death certificate says he was buried in Leverington Cemetery in Roxborough, but according to Mount Moriah Cemetery records, his body was moved there 2 July 1875. He was moved to the same plot as his father.
