... Heart Attack Fatal To Fourche Valley Leader
Mr. Bob Caviness aged 67 years, prominent Fourche Valley planter, merchant and banker, died Sunday morning, November 20, 1938, from a heart attack at the home of his brother-in-law, Dr. Lee Montgomery, directly across the street from his own home, where he had gone for treatment.
The funeral service was held on the lawn at the family home at Gravelly Monday afternoon, a splendid tribute being paid to the deceased by Rev. Ashmore, who officiated. But a more beautiful and impressive tribute was the assemblage of more than 2,000 sorrowing friends of Bob Caviness--men and women from all walks and stations in life, from every nook and corner of Yell County--who with sad hearts and tear-dimmed eyes gathered about the bier of their departed friend to pay a last tribute of love and devotion. Mr. Caviness was born at Gravelly, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Caviness, pioneer Yell County citizens. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of the Methodist Church. On July 6th, 1903, he married Miss Annie Campbell, who survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Willie, Robert and Guy Caviness, all of Gravelly; four daughters, Mrs. Herman Clement, Gravelly; Mrs. Ralph A. Raney, Little Rock; Mrs. Fred C. Burnett, Jr., Dardanelle; Mrs. Fred E. Harris, Waldron; one sister, Mrs. H. L. Montgomery, Gravelly, and three brothers, Walter Caviness, Gravelly; John Caviness, Danville; and Chester Caviness, Memphis, Tex. The death of Mr. Caviness is a severe blow, not alone to Fourche Valley, but to all of Yell County as well; for Bob Caviness was a leader, a man of Outstanding ability and high character. He was strong in his convictions, and what he conceived to be right he fought for. He lent strong support to the churches and championed the cause of education and good government. Though never personally an office-seeker, he was active in politiecs, and his support was no small matter in the attainment of County office. Mr. Caviness was a large landowner, with scores of tenants and sharecroppers, and the sincere grief and sorrow of these dependents at his death is touching testimonial to his fairness, his generosity and his kindliness. His work is ended; he has passed off the stage of action; but behind him he leaves, clean and plain for all to read, the record of an active, well-lived, useful life--an inspiration and a guide for those who follow.
