Son of James Conniway and Mary Pickett Conniway.
His father James Conniway, the Texas emigrant, was born 4 November, 1788 in South Carolina. His wife was Mary Pickett.
She was born 14 January, 1802 in Tennessee and, they were married 7 June, 1817 in Loundes County, Tennessee (presumably). Sometime between the fall of 1828 and the fall of 1830, they moved to Monroe County, Mississippi and remained there until their trip to Texas, between 1843-1850 where they were found on the 1850 Anderson County Texas census. Settled into the Swanson Hill community.
It is believed all but one of their children came to Texas.

They had twelve children;
1. Edward b. 7 May 1818. He stayed in Miss or Tenn.
2. Louisa b. 10 Feb 1822, came to Texas, married Murphy Vaughan, Anderson County, Texas.
d. 017 Nov 1868 buried; East hill Cemetery, Palestine, Texas.
3. Alfred H. b. 1 June 1824 Stayed in Miss through the 1850 census. Married Winny Smith 1844 in Tenn. or Miss.
4. Richard Conaway b. 28 May 1826, came to Texas. Married Lucy Ann Hassell, 9 Sept 1848, Anderson County, Texas.
Died; 05 Nov, 1862. He was in the Civil War. He must have died somewhere else. I cannot find his burial.
5. Greenberry Conaway b. 20 July 1828 came to Texas.
Married; Elizabeth D. Knox 28 Mar 1851, Anderson County, Texas. Died; 20 July 1862. Unknown burial place.
6. James "Jim" Conaway, Jr. b. 08 Aug, 1830 Miss., came to Texas. Was in the Civil War. Came home from the war and became a political figure. Was County clerk for a number of years in Palestine, Texas. Never married.
Was a man of means. Owned a lot of property in and around Palestine.
Died; 11 October 1898 in Palestine, Texas.
Buried; East Hill Cemetery, Palestine, Texas.
7. Lewallen Conaway b. 14 Mar 1832, Miss. I have found no information on him except he was in the Civil War.
No death or burial information.
8. Franklin B. b, 14 Feb 1834 in Miss. Came to Texas.
Married Ann E. Dellis 27 Feb 1853, Anderson County, Texas.
Died; 29 Oct 1871 in Freestone County.
Buried; Driver Cemetery, Teague Texas.
9. Martha Jane Conaway b. 29 Mar 1837, Miss. Came to Texas.
Married; Mr. Dodson. Died 31 July 1857.
Unknown burial.
10. Mary J. Conaway b. 01 Sept 1839, Miss. Came to Texas. Married W.R. Anglin, 17 Nov 1869, Anderson County, Texas.
Death date or burial unknown.
11. Amanda Malvina b. 28 May 1841, Miss. Married; J.D. Worley, 06 Mar 1856, Anderson County, Texas.
Died; 24 May 1879. Buried Stovall Cemetery, Anderson County, Texas.
12. Susan Conaway b. 06 June 1843 Miss. Married Richard Compton 05 Oct 1859, Freestone County, Texas.
Died; 1900 Freestone county, Texas. Buried; Compton Cemetery in the county.

Alfred H. Conaway married Winny Smith in either Miss or Tenn in 1844.
They stayed in Miss on the 1850 census but after that came to Texas.
Winny Smith was born 1826 in N.C.
They had the following children;
1. James b. 1844 Miss. or Tn.
2. Benjamin b. 1846 Miss. or Tn
3. John R. b. 1849 Miss. or Tn.
4. Mary "Georgia" Ann b. 1853 Texas
5. Greenberry b. 1856 Texas.
The only child I have found is Georgia Ann Conaway.
She married W.P. Hightower 18 Oct 1871, Anderson County, Texas.
She died 1934 in Terrell, Kaufman, Texas. She is buried at Campground Cemetery there in the county.

CONNIWAY, Alfred, enlisted at Palestine on April 11, 1863. Appears on a
prisoner of war roll at New Orleans, May 26, 1865. A private Connery of Co.
E was reported as being wounded in the Battle of Mansfield or Pleasant Hill
on April 8 or 9, 1864. Probably was this man.

Winny died in 1866, Anderson County, Texas. Have not been able to find her burial.
Alfred H. remarried in 1867 to Martha Jane Kennedy Watts a young widow, from Anderson County also. Her husband had died while in the Civil War in Lynchburg, Va. (Rubella Measles) she had two children by B.J. Watts, Georgia and Willie Watts.

Alfred and M.J. had a daughter;
1. Emma Conaway b. Dec 1868.
Alfred H. Conaway died on 2 Dec 1868 in Anderson County, Texas.
Martha Jane Kennedy Watts Conaway Quarles is buried at Pilgrim cemetery, Elkhart, Anderson County, Texas. She died 1879
Emma was my great-grandmother. She married Levi Bennett Dec 1882. She died after April 1884. Death date unknown. She is buried at Pilgrim Cemetery, Elkhart, Anderson County, Texas. Her daughter Fannie Lee Bennett was my grandmother.

I have researched every cemetery in Anderson County, Texas
looking for him, his first wife Winny and their sons to no avail. I happened to find Georgia Ann a few days ago.

If anyone reading this could provide information on burials please let me know.
