Martha Jane was the daughter of Branson H. and Eliza Killion Kennedy.
She was born in Mississippi. Her family arrived in Anderson County in about 1850. She has other siblings.
Augustus E. "Gus" Kennedy was a brother. Mary Virginia Kennedy Knox, was a sister.

M.J. married Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Watts on 27 Sept. 1856. Had two children; Georgia C. and William Franklin "Willie" Watts. B.F. and M.J. lived in the Swanson Hill area of Anderson County. B.F.'s parents and family lived there also, as well as the Knox family, and the Alfred Conaway family. B. F. died June 12, 1862 while on duty in the Confederate Army in Lynchburg, Va. of Rubella Measles. He was buried there.

Alfred H. Conaway's wife Winnie Conaway died in 1866. M.J. and Alfred married on July 28, 1867. They had a daughter Emma Conaway. He died 2 Dec. 1868. His place of burial is unknown.

W.W. Quarles wife Eliza Quarles died in 1876. M.J. and W.W. were married on March 8, 1877 and had a son, Edwin Kennedy Quarles.

After the death of Martha Jane Quarles in 1879, Willie Watts, her minor child of 16 began living with C.M. Quarles, who became his guardian, brother of his step father W.W. Quarles, who also died in 1879.

She died in Aug. 1879, W.W. died Sept. 1879 after her. Eliza Kennedy her mother raised the three minor children. Emma Conaway, and Gertrude Quarles (dau. of W.W. and Eliza Neal Quarles) Edwin Kennedy Quarles (son of W.W. & M.J.)

The 1880 United States Federal Census shows Eliza Kennedy, Emma Conaway and Edwin Kennedy and Gertrude Quarles youngest daughter of W.W. and Eliza Quarles and sister to Annie Quarles Kennedy, living with A.E. Kennedy
and wife Annie Quarles Kennedy.

Emma Conaway Bennett was my G-Grandmother.
