Joseph Whitright,87. Civil War veteran. Past Commander of the post of McPherson, Kansas died last night, at the home of his son at 3835 East Eleventh Street, of a brief illness which had prevented him from attending the recent Department of California convention of the G.A.R in Long Beach.
Mr Whitright, a retired farmer, had lived in Long Beach a part of each year for many years. He was a native of Ohio and was a member of the Methodist Church. Besides the son, Roscoe Evans, he left a daughter, Mrs Rosa L. Stephens of Canton, Kansas now in Long Beach, and two brothers John and Edward Whitright, both of Michigan.
The funeral will be at 9:30 A.M. Thursday at the Simpson-Dilday Funeral Home, with Long Beach Post No. 181 G.A.R. in charge. Burial will be in Kansas.

Funeral services for Uncle Joe Whitright, one of the early residents of this community and the last surviving member of the Silas Miller Post, G.A. R., passed away at the home of Roscoe Evans, in Long Beach,Calif., were conducted Sunday Afternoon.
The service at the Methodist church was conducted by the Rev. J.W. Carrier. At the cemetery, the Canton Post American Legion had charge of the service. Lewis Oldfield, commander of the post and Dr. Guy E. Finkel, chaplin were in charge. After the brief service a squad fired a volley and taps were blown.
Honorary pall barers were the last survivors of the Civil war. All in 1863, were with Sherman on the Atlantic campaign and on the front line at the surrender of Johnson's army in North Carolina. He marched to Washington D.C., took part in the grand review, and arrived home in August, 1865.
He first came to Kansas in 1872 and in 1873 came to Salina and filed claim on a homestead near Canton. In 1882 he was united in marriage with Mary D. Evans of Spring Valley, who preceded him in death. To this union was born a daughter Rosa L. Stephens. In 1890, they chose to take Roscoe H. Evans into their family, and raised him from infancy.
In 1907, he moved to Canton, and was united with the Methodist church in 1908.
He departed this life May 28, 1934 at Long Beach, Calif.
He leaves to mourn his loss, one daughter Rosa L. Stephens, and son Roscoe H. Evans, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren were from McPherson. Those attending the funeral were Dan Smyers, J. McKinzie, Mr Rusk and Mr. Lott.
Through his long residence in this community, Mr Whitright had made many friends. Many of these were in attendance at the church Sunday afternoon to pay a last tribute to him.

The first 25 years of his life were spent in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan, except the 18 months that he served in the Union army. He joined the ranks at Ringgold, Georgia.
