Mrs Mary D. Whitright, for many years a resident of this community, passed away yesterday morning at home after a long illness. 70 years, one month and 26 days old.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Canton Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J.W. Carrier. Interment will be in the Canton cemetery.
Mary Dilla Evans was born at Keosauqua, Iowa November 18, 1861. Youngest daughter of Phillip and Judah Jane Evans. She accompanied her parents to Kansas in the early days of the state, and resided with them on a farm south of Canton until October 24, 1882 when was united in marriage with Joseph Whitright, also an early settler of Canton township.
To them was born a daughter, Rosa L. Stephens; and later they took into their home Roscoe H. Evans whom they reared. Both were with she at the last.
Surviving with her husband and children, are five grandchildren; Murray Stephens at home, Gale Grady of Colby; Leona, Milton and Lamoine Evans of Long Beach, Calif. Also a great grandson Gordon Stephens; a sister Mrs Sarah Hodgson of Tacoma, Wash; three brothers, Clark Evans of Keosauqua, IA, George and Isaac Evans of Hoaquim, Wash. She preceded in death by 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
From their marriage until 1907 they resided on the homestead southwest of Canton. Since that time at their home here.
She united with the Canton Methodist church in 1907 and remained a faithful member until her death.
