Johannes Andreas Stender was the son of Joachim and Sophia (Ott) Stender. He and his family immigrated to the United States. Among the family members that immigrated were Johannes' mother, Sophia; his step-father, Soren Anderson; three Stender brothers; and Anderson half-siblings. They settled in Adams and Cass counties in Iowa.

He was married to Mary A Jensen, a native of Denmark.

John A. Stender, 83, a resident of Colorado since 1907, died at his home 1080 Fourth street, early Thursday morning. Mr. Stender had been in failing health the past two years, and suffered a stroke of paralysis about ten days ago.

Mr. Stender was born in Germany in 1858, coming to the United States when he was a young man. He located first in Illinois, later moving to Iowa and Missouri before coming to Colorado. He was in the grocery business in Denver for a number of years, and was also a farmer and merchant in Weld county.

He retired from active business about 20 years ago, and moved to Greeley to make his home. The past eight years he and Mrs. Stender had lived at the Fourth street address.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Stender, and the following children: Mrs. Annie Essington of Exira, Iowa, H. R. Stender of Eldorado, Arkansas, Frank A. Stender of Gerber, California, Mrs. Elsie Franklin of Greeley, Mrs. Edith Robertson of Gill and Mrs. Carrie Thompson of Eaton.

Two half brothers, James and Peter Anderson of Yuma, and a half sister, Mrs. Louise Peterson of Haynes, North Dakota also survive.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 Saturday afternoon from Macys drawing Room, with the Rev. Kalser officiating. Interment will be in Linn Grove.
