Sophia Ott was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1818 in the Nakenstorf area of Neukloster, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. This area is currently in Nordwestmecklenburg, a district in the north-western part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Her parents were Johann Joachim Ott and Maria Dorotea Sommer. Sophia was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neukloster on December 27, 1818.

She married Joachim Stender in 1844 and they apparently lived around Albæk, Jjorring, Denmark because their four Stender sons were baptized there as infants. Their four sons were:

1. Vilhelm Frederick August (William) - 1845-1875;
2. Ludwig Frits Christian (Louis) - 1848-1926;
3. Carl Henrik Jochumsen (Charles); and
4. Johannes Andreas (John) - 1853-1936.

Sophia's husband Joachim most likely died in Denmark between 1853 (the year their last son was born) and 1856 (the date of birth of her first son with her second husband.) She most likely married her Danish second husband, Soren Anderson, between 1854 and 1856, also based on the birth of her children. Soren and Sophia had three children, all born in Denmark:

1. Peter Anderson - 1857-1938;
2. James Anderson - 1860-1942; and
3. Louisa (Anderson) Peterson - 1863-1942.

The Stenders and the Andersons all emegrated to the United States from Denmark, and according to the 1900 Federal Census, this was in 1868. The family settled in Adams and Cass counties in Iowa.

An Old Resident Gone.

Cumberland Enterprise - Last Sunday marked the close of the earthly career of Mrs. Anna Sophia Anderson, aged 81 years, 6 months and 10 days. The deceased lady passed away at the home of her son, James Anderson, west of the city, where she had made her home for a number of years. Her death was due principally to the incident of old age and was not unexpected for she had been confined to her bed for several months and had gradually grown weaker until the end came.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the home of James Anderson and conducted by Rev. J. W. Wright of the Methodist church of this city. Interment was made in the cemetery at Victoria Center.

The deceased whose maiden name was Ott, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on December 25, 1818 where she grew to womanhood. She was twice married, her first husband being Joachim (Youcum) Stender. To them were born four sons, three of whom are living, Louis of Cumberland, Iowa, Charles of Keytesville, Missouri and John of Eton, Colorado. Her second husband, was Soren Anderson, and by this marriage three children were born, James and Peter of this city and Mrs. Louisa Peterson of Haynes, North Dakota. Her husbands and two sons have preceded her to the other world.

In 1867 Mrs. Anderson and her family removed to America, locating in Illinois where they resided until 1873 when they came to Adams county, Iowa settling near Mt. Etna. There she resided until within the past few years when she had lived with her son.
