HOLLIS W. REIGHLEY, 80 was active on fair board

Hollis William Reighley, 80, long active in county fair board and 4-H activities, died at noon Tuesday at the Welcome Nursing Home, Oberlin, after being in failing health for several years.

Mr. Reighley, of Rt. 58 South Oberlin, was born in Brownhelm Township and had been a life-long Lorain County resident.

He began working for the Bailey and Haas Market, Oberlin, in 1920, and bought the business in the mid-1930s. In the early 1940s, he became the manager of the Amherst and Oberlin Locker plants for W. G. Nord. He purchased the business in the middle 1950s, at which time it became known as the H. W. Reighley and Son Locker Plant. It was located in downtown Oberlin in the building that now houses the community center.

Mr. Reighley retired in 1964, at which time his son, George, took over the business.

He served on the Lorain County Fair Board for more than 25 years, and was a member of the group during the fair's 100th anniversary.

In 1961, he received the Clair Hill Memorial Award for his service to the fair board.

He was active in a number of area 4-H activities. He and his wife often traveled to West Virginia and Nebraska where they would buy calves to bring back for 4-H members to raise and sell during the annual live stock auction. Mr. Reighley often re-purchased the animals from the youths who had raised them.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Florence; one son, George, Oberlin; six grandsons; four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Campbell, Oberlin. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Friends may call today from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Cowling Funeral Home, Oberlin.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Carl Beighley, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery.
