Hugh M. Baker, the son of Nathan Baker and Jane Clubb, was born on November 18, 1819 in Indiana. He was named after cousin Hugh Baker (son of John Baker b1762). Hugh Baker had signed the Marriage Bond of Jane Clubb and Nathan Baker in Henry County, Ky. The family moved to Scott County, Indiana in 1819 along with cousin Hugh Baker. They are found there in the 1820 Census with one young son (Hugh M) living next to Hugh Baker.

Hugh M. was the husband of Unity M. Denton, the daughter of John D. Denton, born May 30, 1806 in Kentucky, and Mary "Polly" Hardin, born in 1805. Unity M. Denton was born on January 20, 1826 in Tennessee.

Unity M. Denton Baker died on October 8, 1875. She was buried in the Shrewsbury Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky.

At the time of the 1880 Census of Sand Spring, Grayson County, Kentucky the Hugh M. Baker household consisted of: Hugh M., a farmer, age 60, b. IN; his second wife Amanda R., a house keeper, age 54; and adopted daughter Clara Fulkison , single, age 14. Hugh's parents were both born in Kentucky. Amanda's father was born in Virginia, her mother born in Kentucky. Clara Fulkerson's parents were both born in Kentucky. In 1870 she was shown as age 4 in the household of John W. (23) and Lean (25) Fulkerson. She was listed after his brother Isaac Fulkerson (21) with no relationship stated.

Hugh M. Baker died in Grayson County at the age of 90 years, 1 month and 17 days on January 4, 1910. He was buried in the Shrewsbury Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky where his first wife Unity M. Baker had preceded him. Their son James S. Baker, who was born on May 31, 1863, was buried there after his death on April 18, 1880.
