Was born at Belleville Plantation, Horseshoe, Colleton Co
After his marriage he and his family spent the summers at their home on East Bay and their winters at Belleville. Was one of the first to build at Walterborough, ca 1800
In the early 1800s moved to NC, where he had a plantation on the Northeast River above Wilmington, called Thornbury. In the summer the family moved to Smithville (now Southport) NC. About 1814, after suffering financial losses, he gave up his plantation and settled in Smithville, taking a position as a sugeon at Fort Johnston (he was a practicing physician as well as a planter). His wife Eliza opened a boarding school for girls called "The Convent" by the younger Clitheralls. This was the first educational institution in the town, and perhaps in the county of Brunswick.
