Harriett Alexandrene Smith Clitherall was born to Dr. George Campbell Clitherall, USA, and his wife, Caroline Elizabeth Burgwyn (Burgwin) on 11 June 1809 in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina. She was their 4th child and the 3rd daughter of the 9 children they had. She moved from South Carolina to North Carolina and following her marriage to Louisiana and finally, to Kentucky. Harriett married Major Samuel Spotts, USA, born in Philadelphia, on 14 October 1829 in Smithville, Brunswick County, North Carolina. They had two children, a daughter, who died in 1834 when she was just 3 + years old, and a son, Samuel William Byron Spotts who lived to adulthood. Major Spotts is known as the man who fired the first shot of the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette Battlefield on 15 January 1815. He died 11 July 1833 in New Orleans of cholera. He is buried at Chalmette National Cemetery in New Orleans. Sadly, his wife Harriett also died of cholera, 11 months later in Kentucky. Their daughter, Elizabeth Caroline died 3 months after her mother and mother and daughter are buried together in Fernwood Cemetery, Henderson, Kentucky.
