Clitherall's obituary (The Daily Register, Mobile,October 22, 1890) stated he was a founding member of the Mobile Rifle Company. It further stated that Clitherall served in the Creek War and Mexican War with this command. He was made a Major during the Mexican War.

George Clitherall was the register of the U.S. land office in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, from 1858 to 1861. The township of Clitherall in the county took its name from a lake, which took its name from a tree found with George's name carved on it.
