On September 1, 1899, Martha Josephine, known as Josie, was born to Richard Bennett and Clara Belle Taylor near Hale. Josie grew up in the Hale and Burlington communities.
On Oct. 15, 1915, Josie married Philbert Abner Smith (known as P.A. or Bert) at the courthouse in Burlington. To this union five children were born. One child preceded her in death.
In 1930 Josie and Bert built a brick home on their farm near the Bonny Reservoir area. In 1942 they bought the Hale store which consisted of a general store, a post office, gas pumps and a creamery. Josie served as post-mistress for two years. After selling the Hale store, they farmed in Yuma county. In 1948 they purchased the Kit Carson Motel and operated it until 1951. After selling the motel, they returned to farming north of Burlington and then moved back into town in 1957, where she spent the last 32 years.
The Smith family attended church at the Happy Hollow school house for several years. Josie accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was baptized in the Republican River in the spring of 1932. Josie was a long time member of the church for approximately 37 years.
There were always extra children and adults around as Josie was always a mother, grandmother, or special friend to anyone in need. She served as a midwife, nurse, seamstress to her neighbors and friends.
Josie was a foster parent for a number of years for the Colorado Department of Social Services and she cared for 33 babies in addition to several minor children.

Smith and wife Betty, all of Burlington, 17 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great garndchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Josie was preceded in death by her husband Bert in June 1959, infant daughter, Ina Mae, four sisters, and one son-in-law, Wilford Albertson.
Josie's church, her friends and her family have been a very important part of her life, especially during her illness. Josie has touched the lives of many persons through her faith, through her friendship, and through her kindness. We pray that her faith, trust and friendship may live on through us all!!
