My maternal grandmother.

Neoda was the youngest child and daughter (of three children) of Edward and Franziska (Kamrath) Gross.

Neoda was just 3-1/2 when her only brother died in Feb. 1911 of typhoid fever. She also had one sister, Irma (b. 1901).

Her beloved grandfather (the only grandparent she knew), August Kamrath, died in April 1924 when Neoda was 16.

Neoda graduated from West Allis Central High School in June 1925.

Neoda Gross, age 20, married Milton Cooper (b. July 1887) on Aug. 11, 1928 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Tess Corners, WI. They had six children born between 1929 and 1942 (3 boys, 3 girls). The Cooper family lived in a c. 1840 historic home with an apple orchard at 5810 S. Racine Ave. in New Berlin, Wisconsin.

While pregnant with her second child (Aug 1, 1931), her mother Frances, 54, died from injuries after being hit by a car. Milton and Neoda's second child, a girl, born in Feb. 1932, was named Frances.

An apple orchard farmer's wife, my grandmother worked hard every day working on the farm, working in the fields, and preparing the apples, strawberries, grapes, melons, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and other fruits and vegetables grown every season and picked for market.

Grandma was an animal lover (especially dogs) and enjoyed gardening and the hobby of embroidery. She also made delicious potato pancakes and strawberry desserts. Her favorite breakfast (and also of my mother) was slightly crushed strawberries with cream or milk. Her best meals were roast duck or goose (served for Thanksgiving and Christmas), chili, and vegetable soup.

Neoda and Milton became grandparents with the birth of Mary Schrank in April 1950.

Neoda and Milton celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Aug. 1953.

Milton & Neoda, due to difficulties caring for the property and the declining health of Milton, sold their home at 5810 S. Racine Ave. in New Berlin to their son Glenn in June 1966. They moved to a cottage home at 6165 S. Linnie Lac Ct. in New Berlin. This was the same cottage home where her father lived from 1929 until his death in 1958.

Grandma was widowed in Nov 1966 when Grandpa passed away at age 79.

In Nov 1973, at age 66, Neoda Cooper suffered a paralyzying stroke that required nursing home care (Muskego nursing home). The stroke affected her speech. Her health continued to deteriorate until her death two years later at age 68.

She was survived by her three sons; Herbert (Wanda), Ronald (Nancy) and Glenn (Karen) Cooper and three daughters; Frances Schrank, Millie (George) Gadzalinski and Nancy (Curtis) Johnstone, 25 grandchildren (born between 1950-1972), 5 great-grandchildren (born between 1970-1975) and also by her sister, Mrs. Irma Gollop. She was also survived by cousins from both her mother's and father's sides and nieces and nephews through her husband's side of the family. Note: her 6th great-grandchild was born in June 1976. Grandma's last two grandchildren, Daniel & Jody Johnstone, were born in 1977 and 1979. My sister Lorie, born July 1972, was her youngest grandchild and Lisa Schrank, born June 1975, was her youngest great-grandchild.

Note: Grave marker erroneously shows date of death as Sept. 23, 1975 instead of Sept. 24, 1975.

My personal note: I was 16 when my grandma died. I remember her at her Linnie Lac home most of all (1966-1973). She wasn't a grandma that showed much outwardly affection but there was no doubt of the love she had for her family. I remember her handwritten birthday cards, her knick knacks, her embroidery work, her hyper chihuahua Peppy that always sat in her lap and barked and growled at us kids, her jar of hard candies, and ice skating on the pond behind her house in the winter months.
