The eldest child and son (of six) born to Milton and Neoda (Gross) Cooper. He was born at home in the historic 1840 Cheney-Faulkner-Cooper house. Designated a New Berlin landmark on December 9, 1997, this house is the oldest frame house in Waukesha County.

Hebert was named after his uncle Herbert Gross who died as a boy in 1911.

Herbie and his siblings attended a one-room grade school schoolhouse. His formal schooling was through the 8th grade (June 1944). He then worked with his parents full-time on the family farm and apple orchard.

One of the genetic traits of the males in the Cooper family was height and Herb was the tallest of the three sons in the family. He had a fondness for horses and the family had several horses on the farm. He was hard working but often stubborn.

On August 25, 1956, at Greenfield Evangelical Free Church in Greenfield, WI, Herbert Cooper married Wanda (Krukowski) Weimer, who was 14 years his senior in age. It was the third marriage for Wanda. The first ended in divorce and she was a widow from her second marriage. Wanda kept one big secret from Herb; she never told him she had two sons (Donald and James) from her first marriage that she abandoned in 1944 and never saw again.

Uncle Herb and Aunt Wanda lived at 19500 W. Highland Ave. (off Racine Ave.) in New Berlin. This property was not very far from his boyhood home. Uncle Herb worked for a manufacturing company and he was also a farmer; growing corn, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables and selling them for market. He owned a tractor for the farming and he often let his nieces and nephews sit on the tractor seat when it was sitting idle. He also enjoyed driving the tractor at the New Berlin Historic Day parade. Herb collected miniature tractors.

Uncle Herb enjoyed country music and travelled to Nashville, TN and Branson, MO with Wanda and with his sisters Fran and Millie. He also was a collector of western belt buckles.

Uncle Herb settled into retirement in 1995. In December 2002 his wife Wanda passed away. He was very devoted to her and it was difficult for him adjusting on his own. But his bother Glenn and sister-in-law Karen (who lived close by) as well as many of his nieces and nephews visited him and made sure he was doing okay. In 2015 my sister Janet took Uncle Herb to the Harley-Davidson Musuem in Milwaukee.

in 2014 Uncle Herb learned that Wanda had two sons from her first marriage. He received a visit in 2014 (for his 85th birthday) and again in 2015 from Lois Kuntz, Wanda's granddaughter, who lives in California. She has two children (Tiana and Eric). Uncle Herb and Lois now have a very good bond with each other.

In 2017, my uncle started to get home health care. Uncle Herb celebrated his 90th birthday on Oct. 30, 2019.

Uncle Herb could no longer be cared for in his home and entered a hospice facility on October 31, 2020. One week later, on November 7th, he passed away in the early morning hours from liver failure and congestive heart failure.

He was survived by his brother Ronald Cooper and his sister Nancy (Curt) Jounstone, sister-in-law Karen Cooper, 31 nieces and nephews (including 7 from his wife's side), his step granddaughter Lois Kuntz and two step great-grandchildren. He was buried beside his wife in Sunnyside Cemetery on Nov. 19th following a memorial service held at noon at the gravesite.
