Steve attended school at Goss and Five Mile schools in northern Atoka County. He was a rancher and worked many years for the Ok. Dept. of Corrections, the Navy Ammunition Depot, Dist. Foreman for Pittsburg County, Jones Grocery as a butcher, and Kiowa Public Schools as a bus driver. He was a Corporal in U.S. Army during W.W. II. He married Frances Ruby Marie Nichols on July 29, 1942 at Atoka, Ok. She preceded him in death on August 10, 2008. He was a member of the Harpers Valley Baptist Church, A member of the Kiowa Masonic Lodge as a 32nd degree Mason for 50 years and member of the American Legion of McAlester Post. He loved and enjoyed being with his family and his church family and he enjoyed watching and caring for his cattle. He is survived by his children, Don Shields and wife Gloria of McAlester, OK, Glenda Whitley of Cypress, TX and Stanley "Jake" Shields and wife Shirley of Wardville, OK; grandchildren, Walt Shields and wife Jarrett of Oklahoma City, OK, Valerie Lenox and husband, Brian, of McAlester, Dan Shields and wife Tiffany of Moore, OK, Connie Mazyn and husband Darrell of Cypress, TX, Terri Eddings and husband Michael of LaVernia, TX, Craig Brown and wife Karen of Celina, TX and Dustin Shields of Wardville, OK; great grandchildren, Bryan Mazyn, Bradley Mazyn, Chase Brown, Matthew Shields, Blake Eddings, Ashley Eddings, Madyson Shields; brothers, Kenneth Shields and wife Bonnie of Blocker, OK and a sister, Dora Shields of Big Sandy, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter, Teresa Lynn Shields; brothers, James and George Shields, Sisters in law, June and Janice Shields and sisters, Mary Lou Gyger and Velma McGill. Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at 2 pm at Kiowa Baptist Church. Interment will be at Harper's Valley Cemetery.

From the book, The Fighting Men of Oklahoma: CPL Steve Shields, son of Mr. & Mrs. G.L. Shields and husband of Marie (Nichols) Shields, was born May 19, 1923 at Stringtown. He entered the service on March 2, 1943 and trained at Ft. Knox KY. CPL Shields served overseas in the European Theater of Operations in France.
