Donald Bruce "Don" Shields, 69, of McAlester, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Oklahoma University Medical Center, Oklahoma City. He was born May 24, 1943, in McAlester to Claude Steve and Frances Ruby Marie (Nichols) Shields. He grew up in Harpers Valley and attended the public school there through the eighth grade. He then attended Kiowa schools, where he graduated one year ahead of schedule and as the valedictorian of the senior class of 1960. Following high school, he entered the military and served a two-year term where he spent time in Korea and California, among others. Upon his honorable discharge, he began a career in civilian service at Davis Air Field in Muskogee and had a long tenure at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. He was united in marriage to Gloria Gayle Mantooth on June 7, 1969. They had three children, Walter, Valerie and David. He attended Eastern Oklahoma State College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He retired from the ammunition plant in 2003 where he had most recently been the plant's traffic manager. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Native American art and photography. He was also a history buff and was patriotic. He had been a long-time deacon at First Free Will Baptist Church in McAlester. He was also a member of the NRA and the Masonic Lodge of Kiowa. He was survived by his wife, Gloria Gayle Shields, of the home; his children, son Walter Stephen Shields and wife, Jarrett Davis-Shields, of Garland, Texas; daughter Valerie JoDawn (Shields) Lenox and husband, Brian, of McAlester; son David Cory Shields and wife, Tiffany, of Oklahoma City; sister Glenda Whitley, of Cypress, Texas; brother Stanley Jake Shields and wife, Shirley, of Harpers Valley; three grandchildren, Madyson Shields, Adrian Shields and Brandon Shields; nieces, Connie Mazyn and husband, Darryl, and Terri Eddings; nephews Dustin Shields and Craig Brown, and numerous cousins, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Steve Shields and Frances Ruby Marie (Nichols) Shields, and three aunts, Rosezina Barnes, Maybelle Hatridge and Francille Guy. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Kiowa First Baptist Church with Doug Christian officiating. Burial will follow at Harpers Valley Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Bishop Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Dustin Shields, Craig Brown, Darryl Mazyn, Robert Weaver, Jim Weaver and Brian Lenox.
