Susie Barber Collins was born near Fisher (now called North Roby), Fisher County, Texas on the farm of her grandfather, Stillman Barber. The farm was on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. The family moved to Abilene in 1910 to provide a better education for the children. Susie attended school there and went on to earn a B.A. in 1921 at Simmons College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. There she met Charles P. Strickland, class of 1920. They were married on her graduation day, June 8, 1921. His memorial has more details of their family's lives.

Susie lived for most of her life in Alvin, Texas. Susie taught elementary school in the Alvin Independent School District from 1945-1963. After she retired, she tutored students in reading and continued to substitute teach. She moved to Lake Jackson in 1989.

She was an avid flower gardener and liked working in her flower gardens. Susie enjoyed the outdoors, didn't care much for air conditioning and slept on her sleeping porch much of the year.

Susie was a charter member of the Alvin Retired Teachers Assoc., member of the Atheneaum Study Club, life member of the Eastern Star Chapter in Alvin, charter member of the South Park Baptist Church in Alvin and former member of First Baptist Church of Alvin.
