Ida Barber Collins was the daughter of Stillman Barber and Mary Ann Clark Barber (the widow of Robert Pilford Murphy). She was born in the Willow Branch Township near Milmine, Piatt County, Illinois on July 14, 1860. She attended Monticello School for Young Ladies, a boarding school in Alton, IL. She moved to Gonzales, Texas with her family in about 1876. She attended Sam Houston Normal School in Huntsville in the early 1880s. She was a school teacher in Gonzales. At Sam Houston Normal School, she met her husband-to-be, Uriah Collins. They were married at the home of Brandt Badger and his wife, Margaret Barber (Ida's sister) in Marble Falls, Texas on February 14, 1889. The house still stands.

Burnet, February 12 - Cards are out for the marriage of Miss Ida Barber, daughter of Col. S. Barber, of Gonzales, to Mr. U. Collins, bookkeeper for the Marble Falls Tanning and Manufacturing company. The wedding will take place Thursday of this week at the residence of Capt. B. Badger at Marble Falls, the prospective bride being a sister of Mrs. Badger. (The Austin Weekly Statesman, Austin, Tex, Feb. 14, 1889)
