Swimmer Drown in County Canal
PORTSMOUTH --- An unidentified man should receive credit for recovering the body of Mrs. Anne Kilpatrick Wakefield, 35, of 210 Lincoln St., when she sank in deep water while swimming in Deep Creek Canal Saturday afternoon.
According to members of the Cradock Fire Department rescue squad the man dived in from the opposite bank to the scene of the drowning, brought the body to the bank where other were attempting to find it, then dissappeared.

Mrs. Wakefield was swimming in the canal about one half mile south of Deep Creek bridge with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stubbs of the same Lincoln Street address when the accident happened about 2 p.m. Norfolk County police were notified at approximately 5:22 p.m. according to the report filed at headquarters by L. Davis, county patrolman.
A. D. Roberts, president of the Cradock Volunteer Fire Department drove the ambulance to the scene and F. F. Patterson, captain of the regular fire fighting crew, drove the fire truck and took a boat along the case it was necessary to drag the canal, he said.
Dr. C. O. Barclay, medical examiner, arrived after the body had been recovered and pronounced Mrs. Wakefield dead from strangulation. The body was sent to the B. J. Foster Funeral Home.

"When we arrived at the canal bank where the accident occurred, we found a large group of people attempting to give first aid," the Cradock rescue squad members said today. "This made it very difficult for us to use our artificial respiration equipment," they added.
Mrs. Wakefiled was the widow of Maywood S. Wakefield and the daughter of Mrs. Mildred Robinson Kilpatrick and the late Byron H. Kilpatrick. She was a native of Portsmouth.
Other survivors are two sons, Edward Byron Nagle and William Francis Nagle and one daughter, Sheryl Anne Wakefield, all of Portsmouth; seven sisters, Mrs. Joseph Adams, of Richmond; Mrs. Paul Moore, of Portsmouth; Mrs. James Shannon, of Newport News; Mrs. John Zibelin, of Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Dewey Fussell, the Misses Jean Kilpatrick and Blanche Kilpatrick, all of Portsmouth; four brothers, Frank Kilpatrick, James. B. Kilpatrick, John B. Kilpatrick, and Al S. Kilpatrick, of Staunton.
Also surviving are two aunts, the Misses Mary Robinson and E. H. Horton, of Portsmouth, and numeruos nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Wakefield home, 210 Lincoln St. at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Joseph F. Govaert, of St. Paul's Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.
