Edward Byron Nagle, Sr.
June 21, 1942 - June 24, 2018
Portsmouth - Eddie B, as he is affectionately known by his family and friends, decided to take his last, yet greatest earthly adventure on June 24, 2018. His life has been filled with many adventures, starting with his early arrival in El Paso Texas on June 21, 1942. His early years were spent in the beautiful neighborhood of Newtown in Portsmouth, Virginia. There he was surrounded by a very large and loving Irish Catholic family, the Kilpatricks, as well as many lifelong childhood friends.
After graduating in 1960 from St. Paul's Catholic High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country for four years. He served in Germany where he fought for his country in the bars of Germany against Polish soldiers over many a fraulein. He completed his enlistment and returned to Portsmouth. He landed a job in television production as a cameraman, which led to 52 years in the television industry, first with WAVY-TV then on to CBN and the Family Channel. He worked as a cameraman, director, producer, writer, production manager and anything else that was needed. Working in the television industry afforded him the opportunity to meet famous world and religious leaders, great athletes as well as movie and television personalities and just plain characters in life. He also was able to travel to every state in the US and enjoyed most of Asia, Europe and Africa. His favorite place to visit was Ireland, also known to him as “The Motherland”. During one of his many visits he was blessed to have seen the Nagle Mountains.
His love of children and sports led him to volunteer as a little league coach and then on to coach Portsmouth Catholic Varsity softball for two years. He and Linwood Cherry’s coaching routine inspired numerous young ladies on and off the field. He was active with EDMARC Hospice for Children for over 15 years and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 418, where he shared a cold beverage on many occasions with his many friends and family at the council home. In addition, he played on 15 State Championship teams with the Knights of Columbus infamous teams of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. He was known as “Super B” on the field because he was the catalyst for the winning machine. He played with the likes of Johnny “Moon” Hudgins, John “Del” Delinski, Tommy “Killer” Kilpatrick, Johnny “Buck” Buckley, Eddie “Mac” McSweeney, Rock and Dewey Fussell to name a few. They were a formidable and comedic force both on the field and at the bar after the games!
During those years he found time to finish his education at Old Dominion University. He married Charlene Henn, with whom he has been for 51 years. He was the father of four children: Doug Hogmire (Missy), Christopher Nagle, Byron Nagle (Angela) and Jennifer Lutz (Matt). All of whom in return blessed him with nine grandchildren: Ashley, Christy, Hamilton, Rose and Joyce Ann Hogmire, Quin Lutz, Gavin Nagle, Katie and Liam (Little Eddie) Lutz. He was also privileged to have been blessed with one great-granddaughter, Nora Capps. He was lovingly called Grandpa or Popoo by all of his grandchildren.
Waiting at the Gates of Heaven to welcome him are his mother and father, Anne Kilpatrick Wakefield and Edward L. Nagle as well as his NaNa Kilpatrick, Dee Robinson and Grandma Nagle who raised him, his cousin Hunker Horton and his nephew Little Billy Nagle.
To keep the legacy of his many adventures, stories and good times from Newtown to Deerfield to Old Towne alive, he is survived by his wife Charlene; children; grandchildren; his brothers Billy Nagle (Ruth), Michael Nagle (Dot), Skip Campbell (Helena); and his sisters, Shery Anne Broda (Ray) and Kathy Worthen (Charles); numerous nephews and nieces; godchildren; cousins; his godmother Honey Moore; his Aunts Shirley Shannon, Mary Vinnie Fussell, and Blanche Bailey; and his Uncle Butch Kilpatrick; as well as his lifelong friend Stan Majkut. The family would like to thank Jackie Twiford for all her love and assistance in Eddie B’s final days.
There will be a Wake Service at 6:00 PM followed by visitation from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, June 28 at Baker Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk. A Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 AM, Friday, June 29 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 522 High Street, Portsmouth. Interment with U.S. Air Force Honors will follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, 2701 Elm Avenue, Portsmouth.
