Mrs. Frank Patterson

Mrs. Frank Patterson, of near Chariton, well know throughout the county, died at the Yocum hospital in this city on Sunday afternoon, May 14, 1939, at the age of 55 years and seven months, after an extended illness.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, assisted by Rev. Henry Secor, were held at the Chariton Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Woodburn cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful.

Berdella J. Clark, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. M. S. Clark, was born near Woodburn, Iowa on October 14, 1883. During her early life she with her parents lived on the farm until the spring of 1901 when the family moved to Chariton. For a while Berdie, as she was familiarly known, taught music, and later was employed by the city telephone company and served as an operator of the switch board for a number of years, then was cashier in the Sam Seull grocery in Chariton for several years.

On Easter Sunday, April 8, 1917, she was united in marriage to Frank Patterson and went to housekeeping on a farm near Williamson. In the spring of 1919 they moved to the farm southwest of Chariton where the home has since been located. To this union, one child was born, Miss Marcelene Mae, who with the husband have the sympathy of the entire community.

Berdie had been an active servant in public affairs, she being so often an intercessor between her father and his ministry, helping him with so many funerals in their contact and arrangements. She was very active in the choir work while living in Chariton and whatever was to be done at the Lord's house.

While yet a young woman she confessed her faith in Christ at a meeting held in the Baptist church in Chariton by Rev. Palmer and was baptized into the fellowship of the Chariton Baptist church and has remained a member of that body until she entered into the fellowship of the church triumphant with God.

About 5 years ago she, with others organized the Sunday school at the May church and the family has been so closely affiliated with this congregation that her passing will be greatly felt by that community. Her soul was in the church and its cause, and nothing was a greater delight to her than when doing the thing that the house of the Lord needed done. Her home and church were her devotion, and they, too, have been her joy and crown.

Besides the devoted husband and daughter she leaves to mourn her departure three brothers, Rev. J. E. Clark, of Bridgewater; Manny Clark, of Woodburn; W. E. Clark, of Oakley; and one sister, Mrs. Lillian Marker, of Knoxville; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

The following appropriate poem was written many years ago by Alfred Elmore, a third cousin of her grandmother:

Finished
Lay aside mother's knitting
No more will she look
Thro' the window which opens to-
ward the sun;
Nor watch for her daughter as
She closes her book,
For mother's work truly is done.
Put away in the parlor her Bible
and chair.
She'll need to inherit a mansion
most fair,
Which stands on the evergreen
shore.
