Pioneer Clarke County
Minister Passed Away
Thursday At His Home
In Franklin Township

In Franklin Township Funeral services for Rev. M. S. Clark, pioneer Clarke county minister were held from the M. E. church in Woodburn Sunday.

Thus closes the afternoon by the Rev. Harry Secor, pastor of the Baptist church in Chariton. Interment was made by the side of his departed companion in Woodburn cemetery.

REV. CLARK life of one of Clarke county's most highly respected and loved citizens. Death came to him July 15, at his farm home in Franklin township at the age of 83 years. He was active up to the time of his death the Sunday prior to his passing he delivered a sermon at East Concord and was one of a trio which sang sacred songs, at the services.

He came to Clarke county soon after the Civil war and settled with his parents near Ottawa. His home has been in Clarke county ever since.

Rev. Markwood Simeon Clark, son of Rev. J. D. and Nancy Clark, was born in Jackson county, Ohio, Nov. 19, 1853. In 1856 the family moved to Chillicothe, Iowa, and later moving to a farm near Ottawa, Clarke county, Iowa.

On Sept. 3, 1874, he was united in marriage to Terressa Elmore of Woodburn, Iowa. To this union six children were born, Elmer of Russell, Manny of Woodburn, Edward, and Mrs. Berdie Paterson, of Chariton, Mrs. Lillian Marker of Liberty Center, and Jacob Carlton deceased.

About the year 1880, they located on the farm where he continued to reside until the spring of 1901 at which time Carl passed to his Heavenly home and the family moved to Chariton, where he gave all his time to the work of the church.

On March 8, 1923, the wife and mother was called to her eternal home.

In 1925 he returned to the farm and continued his active life until be passed away July 15, 1937, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 26 days.

He was converted when a boy and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was called into the ministry by his Lord in 1893 and then united with the Missionary Baptist church and continued that affiliation, until his death.

He served as a missionary of the Eden association for a number of years, was pastor of the Unity Church for 17 years, the Goshen church for 20 years and a number of other churches for a shorter period of time.

He delivered his last message at East Concord on Sunday evening prior to his death from the theme of Ezekiel's Vision of the Resurrection, and was one of a trio who sang the hymn entitled, "Lead Me Gently Home Father."

He has baptized 430 candidates into the church, conducted 349 funerals and officiated 141 marriages.

Thus ends 35 years of faithful fulfilling of the commission his Lord gave him, "Go ye into all the world and preach my Gospel." His faith was his victory, his hope was his treasure and his trust was his benediction.

Besides the immediate family, he leaves one sister, Mrs. J. S. Carson and one brother, C. H. Clark of Woodburn, two half brothers, O. N. Clark of Sheridan, Wyo. and I. N. Clark of Osceola, Iowa, and one half sister, Mrs. K. Wolverton of Derby, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Manny and wife moved into his home and for the last three months have made his life comfortable and happy and gave him the tenderest care.

We who are left behind can only bow our heads and say to the Prince of Peace, Thy will and not mine be done.
