CLEVELAND -- Edgar Maurice Lyerly, 94, formerly of Cleveland, died Thursday (Oct. 10, 2002)at Liberty Commons of Rowan Nursing Facility, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Mr. Lyerly was born April 19, 1908, in Rowan County. A son of the late Jonathan and Corrina May Smith Lyerly, he was educated in the Rowan County schools and a 1928 graduate of Woodleaf High School, Woodleaf.
He retired as a maintenance foreman from Fiber Industries, now KoSa. Earlier, he worked for the North Carolina State Department, now the Department of Transportation. He formerly owned and operated Lyerly Trucking.
A member of Christ Episcopal Church, he was a deacon, senior warden, and a Sunday school teacher. He was a master Boy Scout leader.
His wife, Elsie Benson Lyerly, died Feb. 18, 1997, and a son, James F. Lyerly, died June 19, 2001.
Survivors include daughter Barbara Jean Lyerly Allen, Salisbury; brother Jonathan Lyerly, Mooresville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Christ Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Harold Elsner. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Barbara Jean Allen, 108 Birkdale Drive, Salisbury.
