LEWIS EDWARD LYERLY
STATESVILLE, May 16 - Lewis Edward Lyerly, 75, merchant and retired railroad man, died today at his home, Route 1, Woodleaf. He had been hospitalized four days prior to being able to return to his home Tuesday. Death was attributed to a heart attack. he was born in Rowan County. Since his retirement from the Spencer shops of the Southern Railway, he had operated a general store in the Needmore community on Route 1, Woodleaf. Survivors: his wife, Mrs. Mattie Holshouser Campbell Lyerly; two sons, Lt. Col. Arnold A. Lyerly of the Air Force at San Antonio, Tex., and S. Sgt. Charles Lyerly of Shaw AFB, Sumter, S.C.; one daughter, Mrs. C. R. McDaniels of Route 1, Woodleaf; three step-sons, John Campbell of Anderson S. C. and Leroy and George Campbell of King; three step-daughters, Mrs. Leonard Kinley of Mocksville, and Mrs. Jessie McKeithan and Mrs. John Karriker of Salisbury; two brothers, R. J. Lyerly of Route 1, Woodleaf, and William R. Lyerly of Buffalo, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. John Davis of Rockingham; three half brother, Edgar Lyerly of Cleveland, Hubert Lyerly of Kannapolis and Johnathan Lyerly of Columbus, Ohio; one have sister, Mrs. Evely Lyerly of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at South River Methodist Church.
