He was the son of Dr. Winthrop and Louisa (Hoyer) Dyer. When he was a very young child he, with his parents, moved to California.

The first three years their home was in Tulare county. For his fathers' health they moved to San Diego county. Here he grew to adulthood in San Pasqual valley.

He went to Los Angeles county as a young man and married Eva Bowen. They made their home in Huntington Park. He raised a family of three boys.
