He was the son of Dr. Winthrop and Louisa (Hoyer) Dyer. He grew to adulthood in San Pasqual Valley in San Diego county.

In his youth he worked for other ranchers in the valley to help support the family. Later going to the Las Angeles area.

He married a lady named Ruth Pollard and they lived in Huntington Park. They had no children.
