He was the son of Dr. Winthrop and Eliza (Steenblock) Dyer. His mother died, when he was not yet two years of age.

After his mothers death his father put him in the care of his aunt, Eunice Dyer Coburn, and her husband Asa. They raised "Scott" as their own in Albany county, New York.

He married Jennie Hungerford, 21 Oct 1893, in Albany County.

He followed in the footsteps of the man who reared him and plied the trade of a Blacksmith.

He was the father of three daughters.
