...Thomas Benton Coats, son of Washington DeKalb Coats and Matilda Rook Coats, was born April 12, 1853, at Boliver, Polk Co. Missouri, third son in a family of twelve children.
...He married Matilda Lavina Malicoat, who was the daughter of Samuel Andrew Jackson and Martha Emiline Kelly Malicoat, on Oct. 3, 1875.
...They lived on a farm near Springfield, Missouri, until 1883. Three sons were born there. They then traveled by wagon to western Kansas, first settling in Preston, Kansas where they farmed 160 acres of land. The rest of the children were born there.
...The family moved to Liberal, Kansas for a short time before moving to Raymond, Kansas in about 1902 to farm 80 acres of land.
...Around 1913 they moved to California by train, first to Redlands where they purchased an orange grove. The family then went to Hemet, California and bought a small farm and planted walnut trees. In Hemet, Matilda died on July 3, 1914 and is buried there.
...The last four children were still at home at the time of their mother's death, whereas the older ones stayed back in Kansas.
...Thomas remarried to Mrs. Mary Bell Smith with only the youngest still remaining at home. They lived at Colton, California in an apartment building. Then they moved to a acreage that had an apple orchard in the San Jacinto Mountains. At the end of Thomas' life he lived in Santa Barbara, where he died April 5, 1925 and is buried at Ocean View Cemetery (No. 1 title of Charley Coats) at Santa Barbara, California.
