WALTER COATS DIES IN DODGE CITY JULY 3
Death Follows Illness of Two Weeks; Was Widely Known Over County
...This community was indeed saddened Friday morning to learn of the death of one of its most prominent and well known citizens, Walter J. Coats.
...Mr. Coats had lived in Plains since 1919 and was engaged in extensive farming in this vicinity. He was a man of character and ability and endeared himself to the citizens of Plains by his ready understanding and sympathy, his willingness at all times to be of whatever assistance possible to a friend in need and by his likable and jovial manner.
...The community joins his wife and daughter and other relatives in mourning his passing , knowing that we as a whole as well as individually, have lost a staunch supporter and a true friend.
...Walter James Coats was born August 9, 1877, at Boliver, Missouri and departed this life July 3, 1942 at the age of 64 years. He moved to Preston, Kansas with his parents at the age of six and was united with the Baptist church there. In 1899 he served with the American forces in the Philippines.
...He was united in marriage in 1910 to Miss Maude Mowery. They resided at Raymond, Kansas for seven years, moving from there to California. Since 1919 they have made their home at Plains. Kansas. For many years he has been a 32nd degree Mason, a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Plains Lion Club, taking a very active part in all of these organizations.
...He was buried (first) at the Plains Cemetery, but after the death of his wife was re-interred to the Sterling Cemetery with her.
