He went by his middle name of Porter but signed his name, "S.P. Coats"

Samuel Porter Coats was born near Boliver, Missouri on Jan. 1, 1880 to Thomas Benton and Matilda (Malicoat) Coats. He died of a heart attack while farming on the Coats farm northwest of Plains in Seward County, Kansas, on March 31, 1939 at the age of 59 years.

He moved to Preston at the age of three, uniting with the Baptist Church there. He was married to Miss Josie Belle Jones in 1901. They had six children, three sons and three daughters.

They moved to Raymond, Kansas in 1907 and lived there until 1930 when they moved to Plains, Kansas. He is buried at the Plains Cemetery and his wife survived him and lived until 1972.

Of note, in 1909 Porter and Josie separated and divorced only to remarry on August 5th, 1909; siting "they were wrong in securing separation".
