Clyde William Wheeler, 85, of Harrisonburg, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Clyde was born in Briery Branch, Va. on Sept. 11, 1921, and was a son of the late Jacob R. and Sadie (Howdyshell) Wheeler.

He retired with 38 years of service from Nielsen Construction Company as a carpenter. He was a member of Garber's Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg, where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent, Church Trustee, Financial Secretary and was a Deacon of the Church.

Mr. Wheeler served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII. He was a member of the Mount Clinton VFW Post No. 9872 and a member of Mount Crawford Ruritan Club.

He was united in marriage Dec. 13, 1945, to Mary L. (Bolton) Wheeler, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Betty Sullivan and husband, Barry, of Buena Vista; one son, Larry Wheeler and wife, Juanita, of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Richard J. Wheeler and wife, Madeline, and Raymond E. Wheeler and wife, Joyce, all of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Sonya E. Wheeler of Shenandoah. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Roger Wheeler, one great-grandson, Dalton P. Hutchinson, sister, Mazie Wheeler Rusmisel, and brother, Orville T. Wheeler.

A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at Garber's Church of the Brethren with the Revs. Walt Crull and Clarence Moyers officiating. A private burial will be earlier at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 8 at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, 1700 Reservoir St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
