Emily was born in Anderson, SC. Her mother, Elizabeth Garrison Hagood, was the daughter of Rev. Levi Garrison, an itinerant Methodist preacher from Banks County, Georgia who "located" and settled in the Anderson area and served as local pastor of churches such as Smith's Chapel and Old Providence.
Emily married William John West, the son of Robert West (1807-1870) and his wife Rebecca Hale (1805-1870), who were also from Anderson, SC. According to census records, William was a miller in South Carolina and became a farmer when he moved to Alpharetta.
