William Henry Hagood was the son of Simpson and Elizabeth Garrison Hagood. He was born in Anderson District, South Carolina. His grandfather, Rev. Levi Garrison, was a traveling Methodist preacher ordained by Bishop Francis Asbury. Seven years after his ordination, he was "located" in the Anderson area where he spent several decades serving local churches and starting new ones.

Billy was the husband of Rhoda Malinda Garrison Hagood, who was also his second cousin. She was the daughter of Rev. Thomas Wesley Garrison, who founded the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Cobb County, Georgia.

He was Sunday School Superintendent at Wesley Chapel for 30 years. One of his descendants has a certificate issued to his granddaughter and signed by him, showing that she attended Sunday School five Sundays in February, 1920.

He farmed for a living, as did his father Simpson Hagood. His farm was in the Post Oak area of Cobb County, Georgia, near the farm of his brother Levi and the farms of other Hagood and Garrison relatives.

His hands are folded
On his breast in peace
His labors here are done
He has earned his rest from toil
